Star Trek: Discovery: Bryan Fuller Wanted to Explore Multiple Time Periods

Star Trek: Discovery TV show on CBS: (canceled or renewed?)

What would have happened if Bryan Fuller had stayed with Star Trek: Discovery? Recently, the former showrunner spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming CBS All Access TV show.

Last fall, Fuller announced he was stepping down as showrunner from the sci-fi reboot because of his commitment to the Starz series American Gods. However, Fuller remains credited as an executive producer on Star Trek: Discovery.

Speaking to EW, Fuller revealed his original plan for the Star Trek reboot:

The original pitch was to do for science-fiction what American Horror Story had done for horror. It would platform a universe of Star Trek shows.”

Fuller says it was his idea to have a woman of color be the lead character:

I couldn’t stop thinking about how many black people were inspired by seeing Nichelle Nichols on the bridge of a ship [as Lt. Uhura in The Original Series]. I couldn’t stop thinking about how many Asian people were inspired by seeing George Takei [as Sulu] and feeling that gave them hope for their place in the future. I wanted to be part of that representation for a new era.”

And what does he think of Star Trek: Discovery now?:

What I can say is…my reaction was that I was happy to see a black woman and an Asian woman in command of a Starship.”

Star Trek: Discovery premieres on CBS on September 24th at 8:30 ET/PT. Subsequent episodes will be available to stream exclusively on CBS All Access.

What do you think? Are you a Star Trek fan? Will you watch the new series?
