Bring back Guinan! Recently, Whoopi Goldberg discussed her role on Star Trek: The Next Generation and CBS’ upcoming series Star Trek: Discovery, TrekMovie reports.
Goldberg played Guinan, the El-Aurian bartender, on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired between 1987 and 1994.
At the recent Star Trek Las Vegas convention, Goldberg recalled why she wanted to be on Star Trek: The Next Generation:
When I was a kid I loved sci-fi, I loved horror movies, I loved all these things. There were lots of folks on television, you could see black folks on television, but you never saw them in the future. And until Gene Roddenberry put a beautiful black woman, who was the communications officer – she wasn’t cleaning houses.
To see her in the future in charge of communications and being as hot as a woman could be to the point where even the aliens wanted her. You’d see Spock looking at her and you knew what he was thinking. She was integral to their being able to survive wherever they were going.”
In the interview, she said that the cast and crew called her “Shuttle-head” because of her character’s famous, saucer-shaped hats. Later, she also revealed that she imagined Guinan and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) were so close because he was actually her descendant.
When asked about possibly appearing in CBS All Access’ new Star Trek: Discovery series, she said her character would be a “great addition”:
But not a new Guinan. Because you know they will go and find a 5-year-old Guinan.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Guinan? Would you like to see the character in Star Trek: Discovery?
