His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, said the cause of death was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mr. Nimoy announced that he had the disease last year. He attributed it to his having smoked for many years. He had given up smoking 30 years earlier and encouraged his followers to break the habit as well.
Nimoy acted in dozens of televisions shows, movies, commercials and plays; directed several feature films; dabbled in music; authored two autobiographies, books of photographs, and numerous books of poetry.
Nimoy’s last tweet was posted on February 23rd and seemed to indicate that he knew his time was near. He wrote, “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP” (live long and prosper).
In addition to his wife, Nimoy is survived by his children (Adam and Julie), a stepson (Aaron Bay Schuck), six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and an older brother (Melvin).
