Fans expecting to see both the new Star Trek movie and CBS’ new Star Trek series at the same time will be disappointed. According to Trek Movie, CBS cannot debut their new series until six months after the new film, Star Trek Beyond, is released.
Star Trek Beyond is slated for release on July 22, 2016.
At a conference this week, CBS CEO Les Moonves said CBS and Paramount (the studio behind Star Trek Beyond) said both parties agreed to the deal so as not to confuse the marketplace:
When [CBS and Paramount] split from Viacom ten years ago, January 1, 2006, one of the big sticking points, as you can imagine, was “Star Trek.” You know, we both wanted it.
[Paramount] said “It’s a movie!” and I said, “No, no, no, it’s a TV show.” Actually, we’re both right. So they kept the feature film rights, we kept the television rights; they have [Star Trek Beyond] coming out July 22.
Our deal with [Paramount] is that we had to wait six months after their film is launched so there wouldn’t be a confusion in the marketplace.”
As of now, CBS’ Star Trek series is expected to premiere on the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access, sometime in January 2017. Earlier, we reported that the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Rod Roddenberry, will serve as an executive producer for the new series.
