The Surge: Iraq War TV Series in Development at Samuel Goldwyn Films

Deadline reports Samuel Goldwyn Films is developing The Surge TV series with Michael S. Emerson and Colonel F. Lee Reynolds producing. The potential new TV show is based on the non-fiction book Battle for Baqubah: Killing Our Way Out, by Robert S. Colella.

Deadline says, “Colella was part of Cavalry Company, and the book is a firsthand account about how it defeated Al-Qaeda in the final battle of the surge in 2007. A search is underway for a writer to adapt the book and develop the project.” Peter Goldwyn, Ben Feingold, and Melanie Miller are executive producing.

The Battle for Baqubah: Killing Our Way Out is a firsthand account—and sometimes a minute-by-minute tale—of a raw, in-your-face street fight with Al Qaeda militants over a fifteen-month span in the volatile Diyala Province of Iraq. This story is presented through the eyes of a first sergeant serving with B Company 1-12 Cavalry (Bonecrushers), 1st Cavalry Division, out of Fort Hood, Texas.

The author takes the reader into the midst of the conflict in and around Baqubah—Iraq’s “City of Death”—a campaign that lasted most of 2007. The author and his fellow Bonecrushers watched as the city went from sectarian fighting amongst the Shiite and Sunnis, to an all-out jihad against the undermanned and dangerously dispersed US forces within Baqubah and the outlying areas.

The producers have acquired rights and plan to marry elements of the ground forces and Apache attack helicopter missions to highlight the experiences of the soldiers in war and in life.

“This is one of those incredible true stories where ordinary men and women are thrown into an extraordinary, history-changing conflict where success was accomplished by bringing together the ‘ground pounders’ of Bravo Company, a Stryker combat unit and an Apache air combat unit to defeat a well-armed, well-trained force 10 times their size,” said Emerson, whose credits include the History docuseries World War II in HD and Vietnam in HD. “Our troops quickly learned, in order to survive, they not only had to fight Al-Qaeda but their own command.”
