Survivor: Season 33 Castmembers Evacuated for Cyclone

Survivor TV show on CBS

The contestants on Survivor may be able to beat the game, but they can’t beat the weather. Entertainment Weekly reports the cast of the CBS series’ latest season had to be evacuated due to a cyclone.

Season 33 of the long-running reality show is set in Fiji and themed “Millennials vs. Gen. X.” For the new season, the 20 castaways are “separated by generation and forced to compete against each other with the same ultimate goal: to outwit, outplay and outlast each other.”

According to host Jeff Probst, Tropical Cyclone Zena struck Fiji early on during shooting, forcing the crew to evacuate the cast for the first time in the show’s history. Probst added:

“For 32 seasons of Survivor, we’ve been very lucky to have escaped some severe storms. This time, the storm caught us. It was only day two and in a matter of hours, a nice afternoon turned into a severe rainstorm that kept growing in intensity by the hour. We were monitoring the weather minute by minute back at base camp. When the national Fijian weather service upgraded it to a cyclone, we had to evacuate both tribes from their beaches and get them to safety. We have never had to evacuate tribes in 32 seasons of Survivor.”

Season 33 of Survivor premieres on September 21st.
