Telenovela revolves around the backstage world of a Spanish-language television drama. Despite not speaking the language, Ana Sofia Calderon (Longoria) is the star of the show. She’s worried that her days at the top of a youth-centric industry are numbered. The rest of the cast includes Jencarlos Canela, Diana Maria Riva, Jose Moreno Brooks, Alex Meneses, Amaury Nolasco, Jadyn Douglas, Izzy Diaz, and Juan Carlos Cantu.
The series debuted with a pair of episodes (as part of a special preview) on December 7th. They followed a highly-rated installment of The Voice. The first episode drew a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.34 million viewers. The second dropped 37%, attracting a 0.86 rating with 3.35 million.
The third episode aired a few weeks later and drew a 0.6 rating with 2.23 million. The third installment of Superstore aired the same night and also did quite poorly.
The fourth episode of Telenovela aired a week later and saw a big jump in the ratings but the numbers were still not very good. They’ve pretty much dropped every week ever since. Last week’s episode drew a 0.72 in the demo with 2.33 million.
While it seems likely that Superstore will be back for a second season, I doubt Telenovela will be back. The ratings are just too low. NBC may still end up renewing it anyway but it seems highly unlikely. Given these numbers, they’d be better off trying something new.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Telenovela TV show on NBC? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew it for a second season?
