The Addams Family: Broadway Musical Closes in December

Addams Family musical closingIf you want to see The Addams Family musical on Broadway, you better hurry up and get your tickets. The show is ending its run at the end of this year, according to Variety.

The musical adaptation of the Charles Addams cartoon panels, which had previously served as the inspiration for several TV series and movies, started its Big Apple run in March 2010. Despite a flurry of poor reviews, Addams Family had very strong ticket sales and the show has pulled in about $74 million to date (including $12 million from a Chicago tryout). The show has reportedly still not recouped its capitalization costs which amount to about $16 million.

Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth led the original cast and were given a lot of credit for attracting the big audiences. They’re both gone now and TV/theatre vets Brooke Shields and Roger Rees have taken over as Morticia and Gomez Addams.

Ticket sales have tapered off over the summer months while other Broadway shows have benefited from the season’s additional tourist traffic. As a result, the decision has been made to shut down at the end of the year.

Though The Addams Family is closing on Broadway, audiences will be able to see road productions. A new tour kicks off in New Orleans on September 15th. International productions are also scheduled for Sao Paolo next spring, Sydney in 2013, and in other locations around the world.

What do you think? Would you like to see the musical when/if it comes to your area?
