Starting in 1966 on ABC, The Newlywed Game has enjoyed multiple runs that have spanned the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Most incarnations were hosted by Bob Eubanks whose dry, quick humor proved a perfect foil for flustered contestants trying to guess how their spouses had answered purposely suggestive questions.
The Dating Game launched in 1965 on ABC and enjoyed several runs through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as well. Dating Game was presented by a number of hosts over the years, most notably Jim Lange. Like Dating Game, slyly worded questions were used to produce hilarious responses as contestants interviewed potential suitors.
Reruns of both shows have remained popular for years but a twenty-first century update is needed to appeal to modern-day audiences. GSN aims to please and is bringing back both classics, the first time the network has revived pre-existing programs. Though the classic versions are still popular with many viewers, GSN plans to modernize both revivals.
In the case of Dating Game, the network wants to utilize an online dating service’s tests to help find worthwhile dates for players. Contestants will also be able to confer with close friends before making a final choice. Occasional same sex match-ups may be a possibility as well. Comic actress Kim Coles, a veteran contestant of many game shows, has been signed to host. Previously Coles was a co-host on NBC daytime’s In the Loop with iVillage.
For the revived Newlywed Game, GSN plans to add a showdown round to the game. A group of newly married couples will compete as usual but, the couple that wins that competition will then be pitted against a winning couple of yesteryear. Stand-up comic Judy Gold has just agreed to host.
GSN’s Senior VP of Programming told The Hollywood Reporter, “They’re much-loved shows, and we thought the time was right for a revival… We’re pretty confident we’ll get there and possibly put them to series for 2009.”
Will either revival end up being as memorable as the original? That remains to be seen so stay tuned!
