The Hills: Spencer Pratt Compares Cancellation to 9/11

The Hills TV show on MTV: cancelled, no season 7

In what might be described as a verbal pratfall, Spencer Pratt says that when The Hills TV series was cancelled by MTV, it was “our 9/11,” referencing — yes — the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on Washington D.C. and New York City. As far as we know, Pratt did not have a mouse in his pocket at the time of the statement. He was speaking for himself and the other half of “Speidi,” wife Heidi Montag.

The Hills was a “reality” show accused of being extra light on reality and heavy on the show. A spin-off of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, the cast of The Hills also includes: Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, Kristin Cavallari, Lo Bosworth, Brody Jenner, and Stephanie Pratt.

The couple lives in self-imposed exile from Los Angeles. After MTV cancelled The Hills, they briefly moved to Costa Rica, where they had planned to purchase a house. When they arrived, they learned that real estate in Central America can be just as expensive as it is in California. (Neither Spencer nor Heidi bothered to google prices before they boarded a plane.) For nearly six months, Heidi and Spencer say they lived in a Ritz Carlton in Costa Rica, ordering room service for themselves and their four dogs for every meal. By the end of their stay, they were broke.

“[The Hills getting cancelled] was our 9/11,” Spencer says.

The piece mostly focuses on how Pratt and Montag fell in love, as well as on their life, today. They live rent free in Pratt’s father’s beach house. While they don’t have two nickels to rub together, they still have their magic crystal collection. We read it, so you don’t have to.
