The show will follow bus driver Ralph Kramden and his best pal, Ed Norton, after they win a jingle contest and must adjust to life working on Madison Avenue.
Tony Award winner Michael McGrath will play Jackie Gleason’s old role. Jerry Mitchell, the Tony-winning choreographer of La Cage Aux Folles, will direct and choreograph the musical comedy.
The Honeymooners will be written by Dusty Kay and Bill Nuss. The music is being written by Stephen Weiner with lyrics by Peter Mills. The remaining creative team and cast will be announced at a later date.
The show will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre from September 8 through October 27, 2013. The show will officially open on Sunday, September 22nd.
Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein said, “As a kid I was a full-blown Honeymooners addict, and I ‘bang-zoomed’ away many more hours with the Kramdens and Nortons than I should probably admit… That’s why it’s a special joy to see Ralph, Ed, Alice and Trixie come to vivid life on our stage and to introduce these iconic American characters to a new generation.”
