The Idol TV series premieres on HBO next Sunday, and at least one cast member is ready for a second season. Da’Vine Joy Randolph (above), who plays the confidante of Lily-Rose Depp’s character, spoke about the series after its very successful premiere earlier this week at Cannes.
Also starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria, the series is set in the music industry of Los Angeles as a young pop singer named Jocelyn (Depp) tries to rebuild her life and starts a complete relationship with Tedros (Tesfaye) a self-help guru and leader of a contemporary cult.
Randolph said the following about expanding the show’s universe for a second season, per Deadline:
“I absolutely think there’s a season two. I’m not saying it’s official, but there’s definitely a whole vast world that could be developed. Absolutely, I’d come back for season two.”
With reports of issues on set, people were talking about The Idol ahead of its premiere. Randolph said the following about those reports:
“The way the world is now if you’re getting that much buzz and it’s not even out yet — that is the best press you can get. If nothing else, people are going to watch it.
I wouldn’t even be a part of no mess like that. So for me, I just let people think what they think. But I was excited. We’re not even out yet, and people are getting worked up.”
HBO initially ordered six episodes but Deadline reports there are just five installments. The Idol arrives on HBO on June 4th.
