The Showbiz Show with David Spade debuted on September 17, 2005 and aired weekly on Comedy Central. Inspired by Spade’s Hollywood Minute segments on Saturday Night Live, The Showbiz Show was initially conceived as a five-nights-a-week series entitled Gone Hollywood. Stand-up comic Greg Giraldo was the host, with Spade serving as executive producer. After seeing the pilot, Comedy Central asked Spade to step in and host the series. Spade agreed with the condition that it be a weekly program.
The Showbiz Show averaged approximately one million viewers for each of its three seasons but Comedy Central has now pulled the plug. Production on the third season ended in June with the final episode airing on June 29, 2007.
Comedy Central has had great success with comedy-news shows like The Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report but Showbiz marked the channel’s first venture into the entertainment news area. It may not be the last however. Comedy Central is currently developing David Allen Grier’s Chocolate News that will focus on pop culture in a similar news format.
