Series Finale:
Episode 44 – The Graduation
Dave and Vicky are ecstatic that one of their children is graduating high school and happily plan Hillary’s graduation party. One down and two kids to go! Their joy comes to a halt when they find out that Hillary may not graduate because she’s failing gym. Dave convinces Principal Fink (Martin Mull) to give her another chance, mostly so that Hillary will be out of the school. The catch is that Hillary must score in the top 10% of the President’s Fitness Challenge. She’s not training for the test so Dave becomes her personal trainer. It takes a lot of hard work but, she reaches her goal. Unfortunately, Hillary’s so sore that she has to limp through graduation.

After Larry and Kenny are covered in honey and glitter by some seniors, Mike helps the two plot their revenge. They plan to release hundreds of rats at graduation but Larry and Kenny can only purchase hundreds of crickets — which get loose in the Gold house.

Tired of using birth control methods, Dave and Vicky both agree to have contraceptive surgery. In the doctor’s office, Dave gets freaked out and doesn’t go through. As Vicky nurses through her post-surgery discomfort, Dave pretends that he had his surgery. After the prescribed healing period, Vicky shows up at his office and they make love.

At Hillary’s graduation ceremony, Vicky’s feeling lousy and throws up. During the graduation party, they realize that neither actually had the surgical procedures and Vicky’s probably pregnant. The episode ends with the two holding each other on the couch, crying uncontrollably.

Behind the Scenes

The War at Home was cancelled at the end of two seasons due to low ratings.
Though some believed the show to be homophobic, the show’s creator Ray Lotterstein is gay. In a second season episode entitled “Out & In,” Kenny announces that he’s gay. His parents respond negatively but, after some anti-gay slurs, Dave tells Kenny that he’s proud of who he is. The episode closes with a public service announcement for The Trevor Project.
