The Wire: Attorney General Pleads for Season Six, David Simon Responds

The Wire season sixAttorney General Eric Holder recently invited three actors from HBO’s The Wire — Wendell Pierce, Sonja Sohn, and Jim True-Frost — to Washington. They were there to help announce a new anti-drug public relations campaign at the Justice Department.

While the actors were there, Holder lightheartedly plead for season six of the now-ended series. He said, “I want to speak directly to [co-creator Ed] Burns and Mr. [David] Simon: Do another season of The Wire… That’s actually at a minimum… If you don’t do a season, do a movie. They’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.”

So, will The Wire creators take the not-so-subtle hint?

Last week, Simon responded to Holder and wrote, “The Attorney-General’s kind remarks are noted and appreciated. I’ve spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanizing drug prohibition.”

So there you have it. The chances of us seeing more of The Wire are about the same as the chance of the United States making major changes in drug laws. In other words, don’t hold your breath — or inhale, for that matter.

What do you think? Would you like to see a sixth season of The Wire someday? How about a movie?
