Will this new ABC sitcom become a hit like Modern Family or will it be cancelled after one season like so many others? Is it worth watching? Here’s what some of the critics think:
NY Daily News: “The problem isn’t the characters, though they can feel a little stilted. The problem is that we don’t believe the whole situation. We don’t believe this guy would have married these three women or that they’d now have all formed this club. We believe they were brought together because someone though it would add up to a good sitcom. Sadly, not quite.”
USA Today: “The problem here is that while Trophy Wife is an often-amusing comedy, it doesn’t entirely work as a family comedy, because it has yet to convince us that these people could ever be part of the same family. We need to see why Pete married those first two wives, and the answer can’t be because he thought they’d cause funny, contrasting problems for his third one.”
TIME: “This show isn’t what you think. Well, okay, it’s exactly what you think… It would be a shame if a comedy whose spirit is about not judging on surface appearances ends up doomed because viewers can’t get past the title.”
THR: “The pilot is solid, but 22 minutes with this kind of cast and concept barely leaves any room to decipher whether or not you want to spend one night a week with these people. And that’s the thing: Trophy Wife is funny (and series creator Sarah Haskins was hilarious and charming when she met critics in July), but what’s the barometer of an overwhelmed audience?”
NY Times: “For humor, the episode leans on dog droppings, vomit, breasts and a euphemism for teenage erections, which gives you an idea of just how low a bar this show sets for itself.”
Salt Lake Tribune: “Trophy Wife is not a yuck-fest, but – like Modern Family – the humor comes from the characters and the situations… And the death of a pet hamster has been done umpteen times before on TV. But Trophy Wife manages to make it seem fresh and very funny. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this show goes.”
