True Detective
wrapped season two on HBO earlier this year, and now fans are wondering about the future of the series. Will the series return for a third season on the cable network?

HBO has not yet made a decision about True Detective, but Cary Fukunaga told Digital Spy that he would not return for season three. He was the man in charge of season one, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

In fact, Fukunaga said that he has not even watched season two yet. He said:

“I had never planned on doing season two. I don’t even think I realized how much work season one would be. But I try not to do the same thing twice. And I definitely would never have done two seasons of the same show. That’s far too big of a commitment. After season one was done, I was very happy to move on, back to feature film and a completely different world to immerse myself in. And whatever I do next, hopefully, will feel just as different as anything I’ve ever done before.”

As for season two, he did say that it was “set up for far too high expectations.” The second season did not perform as well as the first.
