Trust Me: Eric McCormack Laments the Cancelled TNT Series

Trust Me TV show on TNT: canceled or renewed?

Remember the one-season wonder Trust Me? Recently, star Eric McCormack spoke to the AV Club about the cancelled TNT series.

The dramedy focused on the personal and professional struggles of two ad men, copywriter Connor (Tom Cavanagh) and creative director Mason McGuire (McCormack). The cast also included Monica Potter, Sarah Clarke, Mike Damus, Geoffrey Arend, Griffin Dunne, Greg Ellis, and Kathleen Rose Perkins. The show ended in 2009 after only 13 episodes.

In the interview, McCormack said he wishes TNT gave the show more of a shot:

Loved it. Whenever I see Tom—we’re good friends—we just mourn that we didn’t get a longer shot. It was TNT, and they were really supportive of the show, but in the end they just didn’t feel it was their audience. I never really understood why we didn’t get a longer run at it, because it was Griffin Dunne and Monica Potter. Just a really strong cast.”

He later added that he thinks the show was unfairly compared to Mad Men:

It was well-written and created by the guys who actually write Longmire—Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny. They created Trust Me. And they were ad agency guys, John and Hunter. They really knew this world. So it felt real. It was funny—it had a great pace to it. And the thing that always makes me crazy is this idea that, “Somebody else is doing something similar, so this will never work.” They were talking about Mad Men. I was like, “Mad Men takes place in the ’60s.” That plus Bewitched make them the three only ad agency shows that had ever existed [at the time], so how is that a problem? But it seemed to work against us, which is too bad. But the 12 episodes that we did, I think, are great fun. They’re really good.”

What do you think? Did you watch Trust Me? Do you think the show should’ve lasted longer?
