Twin Peaks: 20th Anniversary Homage to David Lynch Show on Psych

It seems Psych series star James Roday is a big fan of Twin Peaks and has wanted to do an homage to the legendary David Lynch series for quite awhile. Roday co-wrote tonight’s episode, titled “Dual Spires,” and it revolves around Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) in a small town (Dual Spires) trying to solve the murder of a Laura Palmer-like young woman. Fittingly, the murderer of Laura Palmer was revealed 20 years ago tonight on ABC.

Roday tells Zap2It that they crafted roles specifically for the Twin Peaks veterans they hoped they could get to appear. Robin Lively, Lenny Von Dohlen, Sheryl Lee, Sherilyn Fenn, Dana Ashbrook, and Catherine Coulson gathered for the episode. Roday noted, “I think what we discovered is that a lot of them haven’t seen each other for 15 or 20 years.”

As fans of Twin Peaks will notice, the episode is loaded with sly references to the old ABC series. Roday says that they wrote a cameo for Lynch but got cold feet about asking him to do it. Roday told EW, “At one point, there was going to be a mayor character. He’s actually in the episode. He doesn’t speak, though; he’s a really old guy. But we were going to make it slightly bigger character who presents the Cinnamon Festival and has some dialogue — Mayor Douglas Fir — and we wanted to go after Lynch, but we thought, ‘What if he hates it? We’re going to be devastated, and no one else will want to do it if they found out David didn’t like it. So maybe we shouldn’t roll the dice.’ So we played it safe.”

Here are some previews of the episode…

The special episode of Psych airs tonight on USA.
