The owls are not what they seem. During the TCA summer press tour, Showtime CEO David Nevins and Programming President Gary S. Levine updated critics on the status of the Twin Peaks TV series revival. Production is complete. Creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are now “deep in editing,” TV Insider reports. The revival’s cast of 217 players includes Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, and Laura Dern.
According to the report, Levine said, “In watching a little bit of dailies of Twin Peaks, we were both instantly transported. These weren’t even cut scenes. David was happy to share some of it with us and obviously this is a very unique partnership on this series in a way that no other series operates and he’s earned that right…it’s so singular. We really can’t wait to show the world.”
An episode count has yet to be announced or even, it seems decided upon. Here is more from TV Insider:
Nevins said Twin Peaks would premiere in the first half of 2017 (though Levine said “mid-2017”), the exact length of the reboot remains a mystery. “In terms of the number of episodes, it is a fluid process,” Levine said. “David Lynch, who, obviously is doing it all—he co-wrote with Mark, he directed every episode, he’s editing every episode, he’s scoring every episode—for him it is a process of just seeing how it evolves and that organism continues to evolve and until he feels like he’s kind of figured that out and then shows it to us, we won’t know.”
It seems even the release may differ from the typical scheduling. Deadline reports:
“Everything about Twin Peaks is going to be unconventional — unconventional in the handling of it and how we put it out in the world and how we market,” Showtime CEO David Nevins said. “I want to embrace the unusualness of it, and I think it is quite possible we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I don’t know exactly what that means yet. I’ve had a couple of conversations with [Lynch]. I can definitely see longer episodes or the question of how we release it linearly and for those who want to stream it.”
