Underground: Season Three of WGN Series Looking Unlikely

Season two of Underground finished earlier this month, but what about season three? Deadline reports the future of the WGN America series is still unclear.

Set in the antebellum South, the historical drama follows the heroes of the Underground Railroad who harnessed every bit of their wits, strength, and grit in order to escape slavery and live as free men and women. The cast includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller, and Christopher Meloni.

After WGN America cancelled Outsiders in April, Underground remains the network’s only original scripted series. However, the show’s decent ratings and critical praise may not be enough to save it from cancellation.

WGN America’s parent company, Tribune Media, is being bought by Sinclair Broadcast and it looks like the new deal will involve significant changes for the network’s programming. According to Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley, WGN America will be “shifting its strategy away from high-cost originals into more cost-effective originals and reruns.” But what does that mean for Underground?

Apparently the show’s producing company, Sony Pictures TV, is trying to shop Underground to other networks in the event of a cancellation. However, plans have not worked out so far. All this doesn’t necessarily mean Underground will be cancelled, but a third season is seeming rather unlikely.

What do you think? Are you a fan of Underground? Do you want a third season?
