Varsity Blues, His Wives and Daughters: CMT Ends Scripted TV Show Plans

CMT TV shows (canceled or renewed?)

It looks like scripted series are taking a backseat at CMT. Deadline reports the network has passed on two new TV shows, Varsity Blues and His Wives & Daughters.

Recently, we reported that CMT has cancelled Sun Records after its first season. Now, the network only has two scripted series left, Nashville and Still the King.

Speaking to Deadline, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore said they only want to develop scripted shows that are specific to the network’s brand:

[W]e still have several things in the scripted space in development. We are developing both comedies and dramas, the distinction is that they have to be very specific to CMT. I don’t think we have developed anything that could air on another channel.”

In the meantime, CMT is focusing on a new slate of unscripted series:

[W]e are really focused on replenishing the unscripted slate. Our goal for 2018 is to launch launch 3 new additional unscripted series early in the fall. There are a couple of things that resonate with the CMT viewers — those are music-based or have some music element and comedy and escapism. I think we have put both of those into our development slate”

What do you think? Do you watch CMT? Do you wish the network had more scripted content?
