This comedy TV show is scripted but shot in an improvisational style and follows the life of the woman who holds the least effectual post in the most powerful office in the world.
Former Senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. In the past, the role of the Vice President has been a somewhat symbolic one but she aims to change that perception. Her many passions include the environment, jobs, and much-needed Senate reform.
But despite these grand ambitions, or perhaps because of them, Selina Meyer remains very much a people person. Her mantra is “politics is about people” and she hopes to bring people closer to politics and politics closer to people. She’s even given herself an informal nickname — “Veep” — to underline her approachability. She hopes it catches on! As she says, “I’d like to be remembered as the People’s Vice President.”
Meyer and her staff attempt to make their mark and leave a lasting legacy, without getting tripped up in the day-to-day political games that define Washington.
The Assistant to the Vice President and Director of Communications, Mike McLintock (Matt Walsh) is a stalwart of the political communications scene and first began working for Selina when she was Senator for Maryland. As he says, “I’ve been with Selina now for longer than I care to remember. In fact, longer than I can actually remember!” He helped mastermind her Presidential campaign to a very creditable third place and describes himself as a very regular, average guy.
Gary Walsh (Tony Hale) is another long-time loyal associate of Selina’s and her personal aide for many years. Informally known as the “Body Man,” Gary goes wherever the Vice President goes and carries everything she could ever need – newspapers, magazines, make-up, hairspray, and sweeteners.
Chief of Staff Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky) describes herself as “the Vice President’s trouble-shooter, problem-solver, issue-mediator, doubt-remover, conscience-examiner, thought-thinker and all-around everything-doer.” But she’s quick to point out that when she’s doing her job well no one knows that she’s doing it all because the role is largely anonymous.
Executive Assistant Sue Wilson (Sufe Bradshaw) coordinates the Vice President’s diary, scheduling all her meetings and visits. She also acts as the Vice President’s “gatekeeper.” Her straight-talking, no-nonsense approach has won her many admirers.
The newest addition to the administration is Dan Egan (Reid Scott), the ambitious Deputy Assistant to the Vice President and Deputy Director of Communications. He describes himself as, “a dynamic team player who loves a challenge.” He believes his extensive contacts and supreme networking skills will pay dividends in the near future. “Without wishing to sound boastful, I’m the Vice President’s secret weapon.”
In a way, Jonah Ryan (Timothy C. Simons) is an honorary member of Selina’s team, acting as a kind of liaison between the White House and the Vice President’s office, shuttling messages back and forth. More than a little smug, he describes himself as, “the go-to guy for all things White House.”
