Veronica Mars: Fans Take to the Streets

It’s been reported that Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is scheduled to meet with CW head Dawn Ostroff tomorrow. He’ll show Ostroff the 10-minute FBI-scenario demo and try to peak her interest with creative season four scenarios and other reasons to renew his series. The ever supportive fans would like to give him some extra ammunition.

Love or hate Veronica Mars, you have to admit that the series has some of the most devoted fans ever. Rather than simply using petitions and letter-writing campaigns to convince the network to renew their show, they’ve gotten truly creative and, more importantly, work to give the network what it wants — viewers.

Last year, Mars fans (called Cloud Watchers) collected $5,000 in donations to help save their show via a “Look to the Skys” campaign. On May 8, 2006, network execs received packages with binoculars and flightplan information. The next day, on the date of the season two finale, a plane flew over the UPN and future CW headquarters with a banner that read “Renew Veronica Mars! CW 2006!” Series star Kristen Bell commented, “I heard that a whole group of fans rented an airplane… and they flew it over the CW… Whose show does that? Our show! We have the best fans in the world.”

Cloud Watchers have also donated 500 DVD sets of Veronica Mars to libraries in all 50 states and the top 100 Nielson markets — aimed at widening the show’s audience and giving prospective new viewers a way to catch up.

This time around, Veronica Mars fans are taking to the streets. Last weekend, professional street teams and fans in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia were out in force to stick, staple, and stack 30,000 flyers — all advertising tonight’s series return. The show is coming back from hiatus with a “mystery-of-the-week” format, which will hopefully make it easier for new fans to get hooked.

With any luck, tonight’s ratings will show a significant improvement over the season’s previous episodes. If that happens, I’m sure Thomas’ meeting would go a whole lot easier. Stay tuned!
