Yogi Bear: Live-Action Movie Debuts in Second Place with Poor Reviews

The “long-awaited” Yogi Bear movie arrived in theaters this weekend. Based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon character, this live action movie stars Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris, Tom Cavanagh, T.J. Miller, Nathan Corddry, Andrew Daly, and Josh Robert Thompson.

The picture opened in second place and an estimated $16.7 million over the weekend. It was handily beaten by the Walt Disney Company’s Tron: Legacy which is based on the 1982 Tron film. The new Tron opened to $44 million in ticket sales across the U.S. and Canada. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader, which opened last weekend, was in third place with $12.4 million. This marked the sixth straight weekend in which ticket sales fell.

Yogi Bear has received largely negative notices from reviewers. It’s averaged a “C-“, based on grades from critics at The Boston Globe, E! Online, Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, New York Post, The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and FilmCritic.com.

The combination of poor reviews and a weak opening box office means that Yogi Bear’s time in the theaters will likely be a short one. Will there be a sequel, even a direct-to-DVD one? Time will tell.

Did you see the movie? What did you think of Yogi Bear? Do you recommend it or are you sorry you wasted your time?
