24: Movie Plans Cancelled by Studio for Now

24 movieJack Bauer, or rather Kiefer Sutherland, is not a happy man. Apparently 20th Century Fox has cancelled plans to start filming a movie version of the 24 TV series next month.

The 24 movie was in pre-production and set to begin filming in April but plans have been put on hold, possibly due to budget issues. Supposedly Fox doesn’t want to put out more than $30 million and Sutherland and producer Brian Grazer believe that the budget should be $40-60 million.

According to a Fox spokesperson, the halt is as a result of timing, saying that seven weeks isn’t enough time to pull together a feature film of this size. “We’re still working on a script, and hope to make when Kiefer next has time.” Sutherland was supposed to begin work on the movie once his Touch TV show went on hiatus.

According to insiders however, Sutherland is offended that he’s being offered just $1 million to reprise his role as Jack Bauer in the 24 movie. He’s also a producer on the project and reportedly wanted closer to $5 million to star.

The latest word about the movie is that the script by Billy Ray was constructed to play out as a three-picture arc. The story would pick up about six months after the last episode of the TV show.

What do you think? Do you think the 24 movie will ever get made? Does it make sense to plan on three of them?
