American Idol: FOX Isn’t Happy About the ABC Revival

Fans may be overjoyed that ABC is reviving American Idol, but not everyone is. Entertainment Weekly reports FOX is not too happy about the return of the TV series.

After a deal with NBC didn’t work out, ABC announced earlier this month that they are rebooting American Idol for a new season. The long-running singing competition series only ended last year after running on FOX for 15 seasons.

During a recent call with reporters, FOX boss Dana Walden called out American Idol producer FremantleMedia, saying it’s too early to bring back American Idol:

They were determined to get this show back on the air as quickly as possible. We spent about $25 million sending a clear message that it was the farewell season. It felt to us it would be extremely fraudulent to bring the show back quickly, that fans would not appreciate being told one thing and then having the show brought back right away.”

The FOX chairman later explained that the network planned on bringing back American Idol themselves, but at a later date:

We tried to engage Fremantle in conversations about bringing it back in 2020 which is when we thought would be an appropriate amount of time off the air, and could give the producers and creators the opportunity to make some changes that could present the next generation of Idol, and they really just weren’t interested in that. They wanted it back on the air and thought ABC was a good opportunity.”

What do you think? Are you a fan of American Idol? Do you think it’s too soon to bring the show back?
