American Idol: Why the Revival Isn’t on FOX

American Idol TV Show: canceled or renewed?

Why is the new season of American Idol coming to ABC instead of FOX? This week, FOX chief Gary Newman revealed why the series left the network after 15 seasons, TVInsider reports.

As reported earlier, ABC has picked up the singing competition series for a new season. Ryan Seacrest will return as host and Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan will serve on the judge’s panel. The show ended its run on FOX last year after 15 seasons.

At this week’s TCA press tour, Newman said disagreements between FOX and the producers of American Idol led to the show’s exit:

We did bring the show to an end, the economics of it simply weren’t working anymore. We couldn’t really get to a place with the producers where we could make changes to the format to make the show more economical and heighten the intensity of the series. I wish them a little bit of luck, not too much.”

You don’t have to feel too bad for FOX, though. The network just debuted their new singing competition show, The Four: Battle for Stardom, on January 4th, and alternative-programming chief Rob Wade says FOX couldn’t be happier with the series, Variety reports.

We put together this phenomenal panel. I think we have a very clear, concise show. We have a very clear marketing message.”

What do you think? Are you a fan of American Idol? Have you seen The Four?
