The catwalk is officially closed. America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks and network The CW confirmed today that this fall’s season, the series’ 22nd, would be its last.
Created by Banks in 2003, the reality show boasts a staggering record with a run of nearly 300 episodes across two networks (UPN and The CW). Over the course of 12 years, the show branched out from its original premise of just female modeling to include both male and transgender models in later seasons, highlighting the rigor of professional modeling and a number of issues relating to body image.
From the beginning, ratings for the series were generally high. In recent years, however, ratings have steadily declined, with last year’s season average at 1.05 million viewers.
From The CW President Mark Pedowitz, in a statement:
America’s Next Top Model was a successful franchise for two networks, first at UPN and then The CW, and it became not just a ratings hit, but a global pop culture phenomenon. I want to thank Tyra and Ken for all their years of success in establishing a show that was not just popular in the U.S., but all across the world.”
The finale season premiered on August 5 and will end on December 4.
