Awkward: Season Six Is Up to MTV Says EP

Awkward season four on MTV

Is Awkward returning for another season? Executive producers Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler told TVLine the decision is up to MTV.

Awkward is currently nearing the end of its fifth season. The comedy stars Ashley Rickards, Beau Mirchoff, Nikki DeLoach, Jillian Rose Reed, and Brett Davern.

Earlier, it was announced that season five would be the series’ last. However, Alberghini says the cast and crew are interested in a sixth season:

We as the showrunners certainly believe there are plenty more stories left to tell, and we’re excited about the potential to do so. But we don’t control the fate of the show. It’s just a matter of MTV deciding what fits into their schedule next year and how many shows they’re going to have. We’re certainly interested, and most of the cast is interested.”

Chessler said the fifth season finale does act like a series finale just in case:

We always thought it should feel like the ending of a chapter. We really wanted this finale to have pivotal moments for all of the characters, most importantly for Matty and Jenna, since that’s the central relationship of the show. It does feel complete in its own way.”

And what would a sixth season look like? Chessler noted it would be “different”:

It would be very different. We’d jump ahead in time again, and there have been conversations about having it in a different city with a different feel. The reason I said this episode is the close of one chapter is because, if there were to be another chapter, it would be a very different phase of [the characters’ lives]. We’d really turn the show on its ear.”

The two-part season (and possibly series) finale of Awkward airs tonight, May 24th, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
