Is season five it for MTVs Awkward? Showrunners Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini certainly hope not.
In an interview with TVLine, the two discussed the mid-season finale of Awkward, which premiered earlier this week, and how they see the future of the MTV dramedy.
Last year, the network announced season five would be the series’ last, but Chessler and Alberghini are still unsure.
“We’re hopeful that 5B is not going to be the end of the show,” Chessler said. “That’s not been determined yet, one way or the other.”
Recently, the series underwent some major changes. At the end of the third season, show creator Lauren Iungerich left the series and was replaced with Chessler and Alberghini. Ratings for the fifth season haven’t been stellar either. Since the season premiere in August, viewership has been middling to low.
The second half of Awkward‘s season five will air in 2016 and see the characters jump forward a year to the summer after their first year in college.
