Barry is returning soon to HBO for its fourth and final season, and series co-creator and star Bill Hader has revealed why it was decided to end the series at this point. Hader also directed the entire final season. He has picked up two Emmys for playing the role and, last month won a Directors Guild award for directing a third-season episode.
Also starring Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Henry Winkler, the dark comedy series follows Barry Berkman (Hader), a hitman who decides to change careers and become an actor after coming to Los Angeles for a hit. Season four will find Barry in prison after being arrested for his crimes during the third season finale.
Hader said the following about ending Barry with four seasons on HBO, per Variety:
“It was very much in the writing and the storytelling. I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, “Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended.”
But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry — and there’s so many things unsaid. What happens in Season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through, and what I think the whole show is always kind of headed towards.
You realize, well, we could pad a lot of stuff, and just make story. But if we’re going forward, it ends in Season 4.”
Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO’s comedy programming, said she trusts Hader’s judgment despite being disappointed in his resolve to end the show. “Every decision that he’s made about the story, or the jump between seasons, has made sense — so I had to go with his gut on that,” she said. “Obviously, now that we’re here, we’re feeling sentimental about it. But it really does feel like it’s the right time to finish the show.”
Barry’s fourth season of eight episodes debuts on HBO on April 16th.
What do you think? Will you be sad to see this HBO comedy series end? Would you have watched a fifth season of the show?
