Batman: Adam West Holds a Batcave Yard Sale

The recession has hit our nation hard and apparently no one is immune, not even millionaire playboys with superhero alter-egos.

A new video from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s site, Funny or Die, shows veteran actor Adam West spoofing his old Batman alter-ego, as well as having some fun with his own image. It seems he’s fallen on hard times and can’t quite decide if he’s an actor or the caped crusader. Either way, he’d like to unload some old bat-paraphernalia to pick up a couple of bucks.

And in case you’re wondering, that’s the same cave that was used as the Batcave entrance from the 1966 series. The cave is actually a tunnel that was created by the Union Rock Company in the early part of the century. It’s located in Bronson Canyon in the Hollywood hills, not far from the famous Hollywood sign. The tunnel opening is much smaller than it appears on screen and was a fairly tight fit for the oversized Batmobile.

The entire area’s been seen onscreen many times in classic TV shows like V, Star Trek, Little House on the Prairie, The Lone Ranger, and Gunsmoke.

Batman costars Burt Ward, Frank Gorshin, Julie Newmar and West all returned to the location a few years back for the Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt TV movie. A nice mix of reminiscences and tongue-in-cheek humor, the movie recounted how the Batman series was made and embroiled West and Ward in a new mystery, culminating at the site of their old Batcave.
