The Battlestar Galactica reboot is not moving forward at Peacock after all. The streaming service has cancelled its plans for the reboot series from Sam Esmail, which was ordered in 2019. According to Deadline, the project is being shopped to other outlets.
Esmail said the following about the reboot back in October:
“We are working on it. And in fact, I just read a great outline and it’s in great shape. Because the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back into developing it.”
Debuting in 1978, the original Battlestar Galactica series was created by Glen A. Larson and aired for one season on ABC. Starring Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, and Lorne Greene, the story revolves around a group of humans who are on the verge of extinction. As a robot race of Cylons pursues them, the humans travel in a group of battleships across space. Their last hope of survival is the fabled Thirteenth Colony, aka Earth.
Following the cancellation, a large write-in campaign led ABC to air a sequel series, Galactica 1980. The show was set five years after the original and featured only some of the original characters, helping to reduce the cost of production. It lasted for ten episodes.
A reimagined version of Battlestar Galactica began as a 2003 mini-series on Sci-Fi Channel and then became a regular series that lasted for four seasons. A prequel series, Caprica, aired in 2010.
