Betty White’s Off Their Rockers: Cancel or Keep It?

cancel Betty Whites Off Their Rockers?Legendary TV actress Betty White has starred in many TV shows in her career — The Golden Girls, Life with Elizabeth, Hot in Cleveland, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Palace and The Betty White Show (two versions!) — just to name a handful. Some ran for years while others were cancelled fairly quickly. How does her newest, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, stack up? Will it see season two?

White hosts the hidden camera series in which senior citizens play pranks on unsuspecting members of the younger generations. NBC gave the TV show a special preview back in January, following the network’s Betty White’s 90th Birthday special. It drew a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 12.26 million total viewers. The debut was in fourth place in its timeslot but, at that point, was NBC’s second-highest rated show of the season.

It remained one of the network’s top shows until the second episode which aired on April 4th. That attracted a 1.8 in the demo with 7.4 million, representing a 31% decline in the demographic rating. Last week’s installment fell another 11% to a 1.6 rating with 6.06 million.

While the ratings have come down quite a bit, Off Their Rockers is performing relatively well considering it’s airing opposite American Idol. It’s doing far better than Best Friends Forever and, so far, is on par with what Whitney was getting towards the end of its run.

Off Their Rockers is currently the sixth-highest rated non-scripted show on NBC. Understandably, it skews older. Interestingly it’s the second most-watched show on the network with an average of 8.57 million total viewers. Only The Voice has a higher average.

Off Their Rockers is NBC’s only half-hour non-scripted show, is cheap to produce, and can easily be slotted in with other sitcoms. Unless the ratings keep falling, it looks likely that NBC will give it another season — especially since so many of the network’s sitcoms are struggling right now.

But, what do you think? Should NBC cancel Betty White’s Off Their Rockers or renew it for a second season?
