Looks like Better Call Saul‘s season two finale was missing some color. Specifically purple. According to Entertainment Weekly, the AMC spin-off was going to feature a central Breaking Bad character—Marie Schrader (Betsy Brandt).
Brandt played Marie, the wife of DEA agent Hank (Dean Norris), throughout all of Breaking Bad‘s five seasons.
At a recent panel, Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan said Marie was going to assist Chuck’s (Michael McKean) CAT scan during the season two finale, which aired earlier this month. However, co-creator Peter Gould and the series’ other writers persuaded Gilligan the cameo would be too distracting:
I thought it would be a great and organic opportunity to bring back one of our fundamental Breaking Bad characters, and Peter and the other writers rightly talked me out of it. Not because they don’t love Betsy just as much as I do, but it would have distracted the viewer in the moment. It was a big moment in which we wanted to stay squarely inside of Chuck’s head as he goes through the terror and the agony of the scan.”
That doesn’t rule out a future Breaking Bad cameo, however. Aaron Paul has said that he’s interested in appearing on Better Call Saul.
What do you think? Do you watch Better Call Saul? Would you have been distracted by Marie in the season two finale? Who else from Breaking Bad would you like to see on the AMC spin-off?
