Cagney & Lacey: Watch Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly Reunite

The stars of the classic CBS cop drama, Cagney & Lacey, recently reunited to be interviewed by ET. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly are still friends, call from time to time, and joked that they have to talk about their old show once a year so that they can actually see each other.

Cagney & Lacey aired from 1982 until 1988 and revolves around two female cops who fight crime in a man’s world, while also dealing with plenty of personal challenges. Others in the cast include John Karlen, Al Waxman, Martin Kove, Carl Lumbly, Harvey Atkin, Troy W. Slaten, Tony La Torre, Paul Mantee, Sidney Clute, Robert Hegyes, Barry Laws, Dick O’Neill, Beverley Faverty, Stephen Macht, Jo Corday, and Michael Fairman.

The series was cancelled after one season due to low ratings. But, a letter-writing campaign convinced CBS to bring the series back and it landed in the top ten for season two.

After the show ended, members of the cast reunited for four made-for-tv reunion movies — Cagney & Lacey: The Return, Cagney & Lacey: Together Again, Cagney & Lacey: The View Through the Glass Ceiling, and Cagney & Lacey: True Convictions. The last one aired in 1996 and the ladies affectionately refer to them as Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years.

The duo teamed up this time around to promote the fact that seasons two and three of the groundbreaking cop drama are available on TV.com (owned by CBS). In addition, the four reunion movies are being released on DVD. Daly laughs that they don’t get paid for promoting them so she was doing it so that she’d finally get copies on DVD and be able to get rid of her old Betamax tapes.

Season one of the TV series was released in 2007 but didn’t sell well enough to necessitate subsequent releases. The reunion movies are being released by a different company, S’More Entertainment, and it’s been hinted that they might pick up the series releases in the future.

With Hollywood’s obsession over remaking classic shows as feature films, it seems like only a matter of time before Cagney & Lacey will come to the big screen. Who would pay the lady cops? Gless thinks that Renee Zelleger would make an ideal Christine Cagney and Toni Collette would be great for Mary Beth Lacey.

That sounds like some pretty solid casting but would it succeed at the box office? What do you think?
