Writer Hank Moody (David Duchovny) was living the life of novels. His happily-ever-after included having authored a successful book, and spending the rest of his life with his lovely girlfriend, Karen (Natascha McElhone), and their daughter, Becca (Madeleine Martin). But stories don’t always go as expected and Hank is struggling with the changes in his life.

Ex-girlfriend Karen is now marrying the rich and stable Bill (Damian Young). After Hank’s novel was turned into a terrible film, the words that used to come so easily to him have all but dried up. His best friend and agent, Charlie (Evan Handler), works to get both Hank’s life and career back on track while trying to keep his own marriage to wife Marcy (Pamela Adlon) intact. A bookstore encounter with a woman named Mia (Madeleine Zima) will change Hank’s life more than he could ever have imagined.

Though he has yet to fulfill his own happy ending, Hank is determined to help his daughter Becca to find hers. In the midst of his mid-life crisis, Hank seeks fulfillment from drink, drugs, and an endless string of women when he really only wants the one that got away, Karen.
