Castle: Writers Planning for Series Cancellation (Again)

Castle

Castle is currently in the middle of its eighth season, but will it be the last? In a recent interview with TVLine, the co-showrunners for the ABC series’  discussed the future of the show and this season’s finale.

The second half of season eight premieres on February 1st.

Speaking to TVLine, co-showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter addressed the very real possibility that season eight may be Castle‘s last. The seventh season of the detective series didn’t perform great in the ratings, dropping more than 15% from the previous season. However, the series is still performing decently in its eighth season, with an average of around 6.7 million viewers per episode.

Hawley told TVLine:

The reality is that [the network execs] won’t make that decision until very late. So our plan is just to tell a satisfying story and try to wrap up the season in an exciting way.”

This is a similar move the series’ creators, Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller, made with season seven’s finale. Last year, the team intended for that season finale to also work a series’ finale in case they weren’t renewed. Winter told TVLine that they’ll do the same with season eight, but both him and Hawley think the show could continue for more seasons.

“We think the show has a lot of life in it,” Hawley said.

Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see. Word on whether ABC has renewed Castle or not won’t be available for awhile.

What do you think? Do you watch Castle? Do you think the show should wrap up or continue for another season?
