When the news first broke, Cross wrote to her Twitter followers, “Desperate Housewives fans thank you for all of your love and support!!!!!” At the event, Cross said that she believes that the time is right for the show to end but acknowledges the decision is bittersweet. She learned about the news from her manager.
As to what she’d like to see happen in the last season, Cross said, “I want to see my fellows again. I had the best male co-stars; I want to see them back.” That might be a little difficult since some of them were killed off on the show. Of course, there are always flashbacks and there’s been no shortage of those over the years.
Huffman was feeling good about the decision to end the show but shared that that wasn’t her initial reaction when she found out via an e-mail from Cross. The actress shared, “I wasn’t exactly shocked but you always hope for the best, so I was really sad.”
Of creator Marc Cherry’s desire to bring the show full circle and revisit the Mary Alice mystery, a storyline that’s been resolved and revisited a couple times, Huffman noted, “It will have to be a new well, you can’t go back to the same well twice… You don’t want to jump the shark in your final season.”
Strong, who plays Mary Alice and narrates the show, noted that Cherry’s plans aren’t a surprise, “Marc has always said that he intended for Mary Alice to have a bigger presence in the final season.” If that’s true, Strong will have to juggle that with her commitment to the new Dallas where she’s playing the new wife of Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy).
