Futurama: Series Returning, Season Seven Renewal Expected

The future is looking good for fans of Comedy Central’s Futurama. Back in June 2009, the cable channel announced the revival of the long-cancelled animated series for 26 new installments. The first half of that order began running last June as season six. The second baker’s dozen of episodes are now expected to start running this June 23rd as season seven the second half of season six.

The animated series was a big hit for Comedy Central last summer and according to Katey Sagal, who voices one-eyed Leela, Futurama has been renewed for season eight. On the red carpet for the DGA Awards, the actress told Vulture, “Futurama just got ordered again for another season… I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that yet. But it just did.”

It turns out that Sagal was a bit premature because the deal hasn’t been closed just yet. Futurama’s studio, 20th Century Fox, has been talking to the voice actors to make sure they’re up for more and Comedy Central has indicted that they indeed want additional installments. No formal negotiations have taken place yet but that could change very quickly, especially if Comedy Central wants a new season to air over the summer of 2012.

What do you think? Looking forward to seeing more Futurama? How long do you think it’ll go on?

NOTE: A January 2011 press release indicated that the last 26 episode order was for seasons six and seven. Now, it seems they are calling them seasons 6A and 6B. The new order is for seasons 7A and 7B.
