Futurama: Animated Series Renewed for Seasons 7A and 7B

Comedy Central is ensuring that Futurama has a future. The cable channel has renewed the formerly-cancelled animated series for two more 13 episode seasons, reports EW.

In June 2009, Comedy Central announced that they were ordering 26 all-new installments of Futurama. The first 13 ran last June as season six “6A” and the second half is scheduled to begin airing this June 23rd as season seven “6B.”

Last month, actress Katey Sagal jumped the gun and said that Comedy Central had ordered another season of Futurama. Apparently Comedy Central had indicated they wanted another round but the deals hadn’t been worked out yet. Now, it appears they’ve ordered two more seasons.

If Comedy Central follows their usual schedule, new episodes of Futurama will keep coming through the summer of 2013.

What do you think? Are you glad to hear Futurama will be around through 2013? Are the new episodes as good as the originals?

UPDATE: We initially reported the two season renewal would be seasons eight and nine because a January 2011 press release indicated that Comedy Central’s initial 26 episode order was for seasons six and seven. Now, it seems they are calling them seasons 6A and 6B instead. The latest order will be for seasons 7A and 7B.
