Glee revolves around the faculty and members of a glee club from the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. The musical series stars Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Jessalyn Gilsig, Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, and Jenna Ushkowitz.
While the series hasn’t been a huge ratings success, it enjoys a devout following and the network is making good use of that by selling songs galore on iTunes and via CD
Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company, says the network shares in the Glee love. In a statement, he said, “We’ve loved Glee ever since it was a pilot script, so it’s been an incredible thrill to watch the show take root and see audiences embrace these characters in such a huge way this season. The show is a true and rare gem in television. We couldn’t be more proud of what Ryan Murphy and the Glee team have created so far, and can’t wait to see what they come up with for season two.”
While some shows, like FlashForward and V, will very likely suffer from their long hiatus, fans have great expectations for Glee’s return. The network didn’t say how many episodes were being ordered for Glee’s second season but, if the show continues to build, a 22 episode order seems assured.
In addition, executive producers will soon begin conducting a national casting search for three new roles that will be added to season two. Auditions will be open to amateur and professional performers ages 16-26 and hopefuls will be able to submit online. (Details available soon here.)
The casting process and search will be played out in a multi-part special that will air on FOX and lead up to the second season premiere in Fall 2010. The new cast members will be revealed during the first episode of the new season. Multiple versions of some scenes may be filmed to prevent leaks.
Executive producer and creator Murphy said, “Anybody and everybody now has a chance to be on a show about talented underdogs. No matter who you are a Broadway talent or a struggling singing waiter with a dream in the Midwest you now have an opportunity to make that dream come true by posting your talent video and showing us what you can do. ALL the roles will be chosen from the video audition process, which is exciting and unprecedented. We want to be the first interactive musical comedy on television, and the search is ON.”
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that Glee has been renewed for season two? Do you think adding new castmembers is a good idea? What about the reality show-like specials? Good plan?
