TV show description:
A fictional comedy, the GLOW TV show is inspired by the 1980s all-female professional wrestling league and the syndicated G.L.O.W.: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling TV series. It centers on a group of L.A. women who contribute to a low-rated cable wrestling series.
Ruth Wilder (Brie) is a struggling actress, who is having a difficult time making ends meet. Although she takes her craft quite seriously, she accepts a gig in the world of women’s wrestling, as a last-ditch effort to salvage something of a career and throws herself into it.
In addition to her career problems, Ruth is going through a rough patch with her best friend, Debbie Egan (Gilpin). After Debbie joins the wrestling league, their private falling out becomes public fodder in the ring.
Although Debbie puts on a great act, her life is not as perfect as she pretends. She’s truly quite lonely, and perhaps nearing a breakdown.
B-movie director Sam Sylvia (Maron) is a bit of a mess. He likes his cocaine, and his marriages haven’t worked out. He feels deeply bitter about the trouble he’s had getting his films made.
Sam boards GLOW with the hope that it will help him finance his film career and finds himself fervently working to ensure everything works out. Although he does not handle his wrestlers with kid gloves, Ruth develops a friendship with Sam, despite the fact that he’s rather rough around the edges.
Carmen Wade (Young) is from a wrestling family and deeply desires to make her mark in the profession. She wrestles under the crowd-pleasing persona “Machu Piccu.”
A natural athlete, Cherry Bang (Noel) is a former stunt double. One of the leaders of GLOW, she wrestles as “Junk Chain,” and her street cred plays heavily into that persona.
There is also the mysterious Sheila the Wolf (Rankin), who identifies as Wolf, whether she’s in the ring or not. Meanwhile, the introverted Reggie (Palka) really finds herself when she begins wresting.
And then there’s Arthie (Mani), a medical student with Tinsel Town dreams and stars in her eyes. Wrestling as “Beirut,” she’s not afraid to play off of stereotypes. Likewise, Jenny (Wong) takes on the persona of “Fortune Cookie.”
Stacey (Gatewood) and her best friend Dawn (Johnson) are GLOW‘s hairdressers, who provide comic relief when they can. Tami (Stevens) wrestles as “Welfare Queen,” and really “works the system” in the ring.
A sweet and innocent Brit, Rhonda (Nash), wrestles under the intellectual “Britannica” persona. There’s also punk rock aficionado Justine (Baron), whose stage name is “Scab.” Finally, there’s cheeky Melrose (Tohn). This “video queen” is all about big, beautiful hair.
Kicking off in 1985 Los Angeles, GLOW celebrates the age of excess prevalent in mid-‘80s fashion and culture, “…from Jane Fonda-esque leotards to big hair and a synth-heavy soundtrack.”
