Based on the book by David J. Rosen, I Just Want My Pants Back revolves around a group of twenty-something hipsters who try to figure out dating and the rest of life in Brooklyn. The cast includes Peter Vack, Elisabeth Hower, Jordan Carlos, Kim Shaw, and Sunkrish Bala. The show was initially developed for NBC.
Pants was previewed back in August 2011 and drew a very healthy 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.13 million total viewers. In retrospect, MTV execs may be wishing that they’d started airing the rest of the season right away.
When the rest of the first season of Pants finally started airing on February 2012, the ratings came way down. They reran the pilot at 11pm and the second episode at 11:30pm. Episode two performed worse than the repeat and registered a 0.7 demo rating with 1.23 million. Compared to the August preview, this was an episode-to-episode decline of 73% in the demo and 76% in viewership.
The number fluctuated over the course of the season. The 12th and final episode of the season represented a series low, garnering a 0.6 in the demo with 1.09 million.
In a statement, MTV said, “We’re proud to have aired I Just Want My Pants Back, with its impressive creative pedigree and talented group of actors… Many factors go in to determining renewals, however, and ultimately, we decided not to move forward with an additional season of Pants.”
Executive produced by Rosen, Dave Bartis, Doug Liman, and Gene Klein, Pants may be shopped to other cable channels.
