In Living Color: FOX Plans for Reboot Cancelled (for Now)

cancelledIn October 2011, FOX announced plans to revive their sketch comedy series, In Living Color. The plan was to air two new half-hour specials/episodes in the spring of 2012 and possibly produce more after that. They were described this way:

The specials will be hosted and executive-produced by original series creator/executive producer Keenen Ivory Wayans. This is a modern-day take on the hit sketch comedy show that will feature a new cast of fresh, young talent, as well as musical performances by special guests. “In Living Color” aired from 1990 to 1994 on FOX. Starring Keenen Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans, the show launched both of their careers, as well as those of siblings Shawn, Marlon and Kim, not to mention featured players Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier, and “Fly Girl” Jennifer Lopez.

The half hours didn’t air last spring and were supposedly being held for some time this season. Now, we know that the project has been cancelled.

At the Winter TCA Press Tour, FOX’s Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly, said, “That’s not going to happen… Unfortunately for various reasons it just didn’t come together. I mean that show was a seminal show on television and the bar was set at that level… It just didn’t seem like it was going to kind of reinvent the next chapter.”

He added, “I’m not giving up all hope that at some point we could reboot that.”

What do you think? Would you like to see In Living Color return to FOX? Do you think there’s a place for a sketch comedy show in primetime?
