Jersey Shore: MTV Orders Season Two; Will Everyone Be Back?

In spite of — or more likely because of — all of the controversy surrounding Jersey Shore, the MTV reality series has been renewed for a second season.

Jersey Shore follows the lives of eight housemates as they spend their summer on the New Jersey Shore. The players are Jenni Farley, Michael Sorrentino, Nicole Polizzi, Paul DelVecchio, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Sammi Giancola, Vinny Guadagnino, and Angelina Pivarnick.

The series debuted amid lots of controversy and complaints about the use of words like “guido” and “guidette” and perpetuating Italian-American stereotypes. Senator Joseph F. Vitale even sent a letter to Viacom, MTV’s parent company, asking them to cancel the series.

The show got big numbers though, making it the highest-rated show on the cable channel. Understandably, MTV refused to cancel the show and released a statement that said, “Jersey Shore is a reality series that follows eight young adults spending their summer at the beach. The show continues MTV’s history of documenting various subcultures, rites of passage of young people, and the ways they self-identify. The Italian-American cast takes pride in their ethnicity. We understand that this show is not intended for every audience and depicts just one aspect of youth culture.”

The show seemed like a lock for a second season but the cast understandably wanted more money for their continued participation. They stood together and maintained that each deserved $10,000 an episode. After a couple rounds of negotiations, an agreement was reached and MTV announced Jersey Shore’s renewal.

Tony DiSanto, president of programming for MTV, said, “Our audience has fallen in love with Jersey Shore and its amazing cast who have really grown together as a family. That bond gives the show its heart, and we’re thrilled to reunite these friends to bring fans more of what they love — laughs, love, drama and of course, GTL.”

MTV is planning to bring the show back for round two in the summer months but that means they need to get filming soon. Located in the northeast, the Jersey Shore is currently under snow and, based on some of the complaints, many residents probably wouldn’t be too crazy to have the troupe back in their area either.

Season two will be made up of 12 episodes and the filming will take place in a warmer, undisclosed locale.

All of the castmembers are signed for season two but, according to TMZ, Pivarnick may not actually be on the show. Though she signed a holding contract and received a fee, MTV isn’t obligated to include Pivarnick in the episodes. If that happens, she’ll receive her holding fee but MTV won’t have to pay her for any episodes.

What do you think? Does the show offend you? Are you glad that it’s been renewed? Would it matter to you if all of the cast didn’t return?
