King of the Hill: Revival of Cancelled Animated Series Won’t Be Coming to FOX

King of the Hill will not be returning to FOX if it is revived. A revival of the cancelled animated series has been in the works for some time. Co-creator Mike Judge reiterated that it was still likely to happen when he appeared at Comic-Con International: San Diego earlier this summer.

Created by Judge and Greg Daniels, King of the Hill ran for 13 seasons on FOX, from 1997 until 2009. Starring Judge, Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Brittany Murphy, Johnny Hardwick, Stephen Root, Toby Huss, and Tom Petty, the comedy revolves around the Hill family who lives in a fictional town in Texas.

Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn recently spoke about the animated series revival, per THR:

“That’s not going to be with FOX. We love that team, and we love that show. It’s obviously part of our animation legacy. But we’re we’re really focusing on animation is launching the kind of the next wave of our signature animated series, while still having our great legacy shows.”

A revival of King of the Hill was first discussed back in 2017, when producer 20th Century Fox Television and the FOX network were owned by the same company. Disney now owns the former and FOX is looking to either own or partially own any new programming that the network airs. That focus is a key reason that King of the Hill won’t be returning to FOX.

“We’re really focused on what are the new shows that we believe can creatively break out, that we also have a significant ownership stake in, and if not outright own 100 percent of it,” Thorn said. “And on a show like King of the Hill, which we love, there’s really no opportunity for us to have an ownership stake in that show. It’s not a move that we can make as we grow out our next wave of animation, where ownership is so, so crucial to the long-running success of these series.”
