The Knick: Steven Soderbergh on His Plans for Seasons Three and Four

What’s next for The Knick? Creator Steven Soderbergh recently spoke with Indiewire about his plans for the next two seasons of Cinemax’s acclaimed historical drama.

Season two of The Knick just ended on December 18th.

In the interview, Soderbergh said the next season could be “radically different” from the two before:

I told them that I’m going to do the first two years and then we are going to break out the story for seasons 3 and 4 and try and find a filmmaker or filmmakers to do this the way that I did. This is how we want to do this so that every two years, whoever comes on, has the freedom to create their universe.”

Though the series has yet to be officially renewed, Cinemax has ordered a script for the first episode of season three and a rough outline already. For the next season, Soderbergh says he wants to invite new filmmakers to make what they want of the historical series about an early 20th c. hospital in New York City.

They don’t have to shoot it the way I shoot it. They don’t have to score it the way I score it. They don’t have to cast who I’ve cast. They have maximum freedom to come in and just go, ‘I want to wipe the slate clean.’”

Currently, Soderbergh has his slate full. The director is working on The Girlfriend Experience, an upcoming series for Starz based on his 2009 film of the same name.

So, what’s next for The Knick? We’ll just have to wait. Soderbergh says if there is a new season, it won’t air until at least 2017.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Knick? Did you watch the season two finale? Do you think there should be another season?
