In 2004, the reality competition was cancelled after three seasons on the air. After a year off, NBC brought it back for three more rounds. The network cancelled it once again.
As you may have noticed, NBC is struggling in the ratings so they decided to bring Last Comic Standing back, likely hoping that absence had made viewers more fond of the series.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The season premiere on June 7th attracted a 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.04 million viewers. Expectations are lower for summer runs but NBC couldn’t be pleased with this performance; bested by CBS reruns in total viewership and by ABC in the key demo.
The ratings grew a bit for the second week but then started going down in subsequent weeks. A few weeks ago, Last Comic Standing hit a low of a 1.6 in the demo and 3.98 million viewers. According to the overnights, last night’s finale hit another new low, mustering just a 1.5 in the demo (tied for third place) and 3.93 million viewers (fourth place). That’s reportedly the show’s lowest-rated finale in its history.
Will the show be back next summer? This season’s ratings certainly don’t mandate it but you never know. Last Comic Standing is relatively inexpensive to produce and, considering the state of NBC’s ratings, the network could bring it back just to have some more original programming for next summer.
